A Sprint Aquathon is a short-distance multi-sport event that combines running and swimming, typically in a specific order:

Swim

Run

The Sprint Aquathon tests both endurance and transition skills, as athletes must quickly switch from running to swimming and back to running. It’s a fast-paced event that emphasizes both speed and stamina.

 

Volunteer Roles – Special Olympics Texas Aquathon

Join us for an exciting day at the Special Olympics Texas Aquathon! Volunteers will play a key role in ensuring the event runs smoothly and that athletes have a positive, supportive experience.

Volunteer Roles Include:

  1. Race Set-Up Volunteer
    Help prepare the venue by setting up swim lanes, marking running courses, and ensuring all race equipment is ready. Volunteers will also assist with organizing transition areas where athletes move between the run and swim portions.
  2. Timing and Scoring Volunteer
    Assist with recording the times for each athlete during the run and swim portions of the aquathon. Volunteers will ensure accurate tracking and smooth transitions between different parts of the race.
  3. Transition Area Volunteer
    Guide athletes as they move from the run to the swim and back to the final run. Ensure athletes have a smooth transition, providing encouragement and assistance if needed, while keeping the transition area organized.
  4. Swim Support Volunteer
    Assist swimmers by providing support, such as helping athletes into the water, offering encouragement during the swim, and ensuring safety in and around the pool.
  5. Run Course Volunteer
    Help direct athletes on the running course, ensuring they stay on track and providing encouragement along the way. Volunteers may also assist with water stations or other race logistics.
  6. Finish Line and Awards Volunteer
    Greet athletes as they cross the finish line, record their times, and provide celebratory support. Volunteers will also help with the award ceremony, ensuring athletes receive their medals and recognition.
  7. Medical Volunteer
    Be on standby in case of any medical needs during the race. This role requires basic first aid knowledge, and volunteers will be stationed at key areas along the course and near the pool.
Volunteer Requirements:

  • Wear athletic attire and comfortable shoes.
  • Be ready to provide support and encouragement to athletes.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and work in an outdoor or poolside environment.

Assist with setting up the venue for the aquathon, including preparing swim lanes, marking the running course, organizing transition areas, and ensuring all race equipment is in place. Volunteers will help create a smooth and organized environment for athletes and ensure the event runs efficiently.

Be in charge of timing a specific athlete or team for the duration of the aquathon, including both the swimming and running portions of the race. Volunteers will ensure accurate timing, track the athlete’s progress through each segment, and provide support as needed to ensure smooth transitions between the swim and run portions.

Provide basic first aid support during the aquathon, assisting athletes and volunteers with minor injuries or medical needs. Volunteers will be stationed at key areas, ready to respond quickly and alert medical staff if necessary. Basic first aid knowledge and a calm, compassionate demeanor are required.

Present medals and awards to athletes after they complete the aquathon. Volunteers will announce winners, congratulate participants, and help create a positive and celebratory atmosphere. A friendly and enthusiastic attitude is essential for this role.

Ensure the safety of athletes during the swimming portion of the aquathon. Volunteers will monitor the pool, assist athletes as needed, and respond quickly in case of an emergency. A current lifeguard certification is required for this role.
